The collapse left the port with only two berths big enough for large cross-channel ferries, one of which will be closed for repairs from Monday. Commons tour row MP survives vote22 March 2005 Conservative MP Jonathan Sayeed has survived an attempt to deselect him in a row over allegations he had profited from private tours of Parliament. Mr Sayeed had denied a claim that he received payment for guiding visitors around the Palace of Westminster. Area aiming to cash in on tourism22 March 2005 The drive has begun in London to encourage more tourists to head further west than Theatreland. The London Development Agency and West London Business are hoping to increase the area's stake in the English capital's £15bn tourism industry. Cashless commuting 'within five years'22 March 2005 Londoners will be able to navigate the capital's transport system without cash within the next five years as the £192m Oyster smartcard travel system is rolled out, its developers claim. Transport for London (TfL) this week extended the use of the card's prepay facility so that it can be used on the capital's 6,000 buses. Birmingham motorways on camera15 March 2005 Hopes to cut traffic jams and improve road safety on one of the busiest parts of the UK road system with a £1.9m CCTV network upgrade.The agency has introduced the new video monitoring system on the M5, M6 and M42 motorways around Birmingham, so it can react faster to accidents or congestion caused by major events. Travel records system will slash paperwork15 March 2005 The travel industry is to introduce a UK-wide electronic customer records system that will save millions and improve holiday booking. Four of the UK's largest tour operators - First Choice, My Travel, Thomas Cook and TUI - have already signed up to the web based system, which will provide over 5,000 travel agents with electronic invoices and booking documents, when it goes live next month. P&O makes waves with call centre upgrade15 March 2005 P&O Ferries has introduced a new £2.3m call centre and customer relationship management (CRM) system to speed up reservations and improve call handling. Using Avaya's IP-based Definity platform, the ferry company is now able to channel customer calls between its Dover, Calais and Europoort contact centres to deal with peaks in demand. Tell me more!
